Oregon Hill

Oregon
Hill, located adjacent to downtown is a still very much a working
class neighborhood. Many of the homes have origins in the late 1800's
to mid 1920's. The homes originally served as tenements for workers
of nearby industries during and after the industrial revolution. The
Downtown Expressway disjointed the once cohesive neighborhood in the
1970's, much to the dismay of the residents. Oregon Hill is currently
in a zone of transition with houses each year vanishing due to development
pressures from all sides of the district. Nevertheless homes continue
to be renovated, restoring them back to their original glory. Saint
Andrews Church serves as the defining structure of the neighborhood
with its unique Gothic architecture. Oregon Hill also has a small
selection of neighborhood stores and restaurants. |
